Taking the long way home
We recently left behind the comforts of a home and jobs in Melbourne to begin our slow journey back home to the US. We are sad to be leaving behind the life we’ve established here over the last three years, but very excited about the travels that lay ahead of us and the idea of returning home again.
The long way home started with a road trip to Sydney, which was a good way of testing out our packing skills, especially with a little one in tow. It also allowed for one last journey in our little car before selling it off. We drove up the NSW coast to Sydney where we arrived about the same time that everyone else was arriving for World Youth Day, minus the Pope, who arrived the day we departed (fortunate for us given the added million people). We took the inland road back, starting in the Blue Mountains a couple hours West of Sydney where we were able to properly break in the baby backpack carrier for the first time as we traveled down the “Great Staircase.”
Rounding out the journey was a trip through the nation’s capital, Canberra, and some wine tasting in Rutherglen, along the border of Victoria and NSW. All in all, a pretty good way to start out the journey home. Next, we get to see how Oliver handles air travel now that he’s more mobile….
