Sandringham Walkabout

Melbourne is situated at the northern tip of Port Phillip Bay and its suburban extents wrap all around the sides this body of water. In mid-August, we took the commuter rail (see link for maps) to the end of the Sandringham line and hoofed it back to our apartment (b/w Balaclava and Windsor stations on said line). Port Phillip Bay is almost totally enclosed by land so we won't find any waves, but we've never lived so close to a beach so the sun and sand are a pretty good start.

Dinner (beef, no pork)

We hosted our first Melbourne dinner party the other night with friends from Eric's office and their significant others. We did not serve swine, but had some tasty Skirt Steak instead. Yum.

Good reading

In hono(u)r of our blog subject, this note... I just finished a book recently called Pig Perfect by Peter Kaminsky. Not only does Mr. Kaminsky describe in detail why you should eat no swine before it's time, he adds the nice touch of including the recipes from the most memorable dishes during his search for the perfect pig. He also writes quite a lot about sustainable agriculture. Read it. Think about it.

Welcome to PorkPeople

Herein you will find random notes and pics from our lives as we discover this and that about our new home, Melbourne Australia. We'll keep this up for as long as it remains useful and interesting.

This pic was taken at the Victoria Market - the largest of the indoor/outdoor markets here in Melb (note hanging pork products at the upper right).
